“The Rift: A Cascadia Story 6.0” Short Film Spring 2020
I worked as a Cutter on the Cascada 6.0. Which is a series of short films that has been happening over many years at Capilano University. Written and directed by teacher David Hauka, this sci-fi piece is set 100 years in the future. This military inspired piece is set in battle between the humans and the these “energy rifts”. There are three teams out on the field, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. In the command centre there leader Captain Alexi Thorne and his computer altered assistants communicating with the field operatives.
In the head quarters, the three characters are a lot more polished and modern. The captain wear’s a 1990’s military suit with a sash front and large shoulders in inspiration of the 1940’s. His assistants are in asymmetrical long vests made of white and grey colours to signify lab coats in a more modern and sic-fi way.
Both vests were draped on the dress form following the designers desgins. We did have to simplify the designs due to the short time we had for constructing them. I drafted and sewed these two vests in three days including two fittings.
This whole project was completed in three weeks, one week of designing and planning. Two weeks for construction and shooting. This project has pushed my skills extremely, I learned a lot about working with a designer and draping. I am very happy with the result!
